The historic Zunterer violin owned by Einstein
The total price will be over £1m once charges are included

A violin previously belonging to the famous scientist has been sold £860k during a sale.

This Zunterer violin from 1894 is thought to have been his earliest instrument while being originally estimated to fetch about £300k when it went on the block in South Cerney, Gloucestershire.

One book on philosophy that Einstein presented to a colleague also sold for two thousand two hundred pounds.

Each of the sale amounts will include an additional commission of 26.4% added on top, so that the total cost for Einstein's violin will rise above £1m.

Auctioneers believe that after the additional charges are added, this auction might represent the highest ever for an instrument not once played by a performing artist or crafted by Stradivari – while the previous record being held by a violin that was likely played aboard the Titanic.

Einstein with his violin
The famous scientist was an avid player who commenced playing at age six and carried on for his entire lifetime.

One bike saddle also owned by Einstein failed to sell during the sale and might get re-listed.

All pieces up for auction were given to his colleague and physicist Max von Laue in late 1932.

Soon after, he escaped to the US to flee the rise of antisemitism and National Socialism in his homeland.

Max von Laue gifted them to a friend and admirer of Einstein, Margarete after twenty years, and the seller was her descendant that has put them up for sale.

One more instrument once owned by the scientist, that he received to the scientist when he arrived in America during 1933, was sold in a sale for $516.5k (£370,000) in the United States during 2018.
