The future president of the Oxford Union has been removed from his position after failing a vote of confidence that followed his disputed social media posts about Charlie Kirk.

The vote against George Abaraonye achieved the necessary two-thirds threshold to oust him from his position, according to an statement from the society.

Contentious Posts

The controversy began after Mr Abaraonye reportedly shared messages on online platforms that appeared to welcome the killing of Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot while addressing a college in Utah.

According to reports, one social media message reportedly stated "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the acronym for 'laughing out loud'.

The president-elect is also reported to have posted in a messaging group with fellow students seeming to express approval of the event.

Vote Outcome

The no-confidence motion was conducted over the weekend, with results revealed on this week.

Official notices showed that 1,228 ballots were cast in favor of no confidence, while just over five hundred were opposed the motion.

The notice stated that the president-elect was deemed to have stepped down in accordance with the society's regulations.

Election Controversies

Proceedings were informally suspended early on Monday after the election official was allegedly subjected to "interference, threats, and inappropriate behavior" from several representatives.

In a statement, the student asserted that the count had been halted because electoral officials believed "no legitimate and true result could be reached as a result of process errors".

His response categorically refuted that any person acting for George had participated in intimidating or disruptive behavior.

Ongoing Dispute

The student stated that extremely serious issues had been submitted to the governing body and that he continued as the elected leader.

His comment added that George was "proud and thankful to have the support of well in excess of a majority of university members" who supported a "secure voting process and oppose efforts to undermine the electoral process".

Opponents have said that any decision to keep him would "demonstrate internationally that the society has prioritized politics over principles".

External Responses

On recently, Mikey McCoy presented an public message to the Oxford Union on a related program broadcast.

The letter criticized the union of becoming a institution where "presidents of the union openly applaud the assassination of a ideological rival".

The communication warned that if the student were to keep his position, Kirk's allies would "directly reach out to every American political speaker who has ever spoken at the society and advise them against future participation".

The Oxford Union had earlier criticized Mr Abaraonye's comments after the activist's killing and stated that complaints filed against him had been referred for official review.

The president-elect had been one of several students to debate with Kirk at the society in spring.
